Boathouse Cats

This is the first image completed for my book, "The Tale of the Boat House Cats". It was painted in 1994, but the book was never completed.
I was teaching painting at a local college at the time and one of my students had asked me to check on a cat who had taken up residence in their boat house, as the student was going to be in Virginia for a few weeks.

This painting was completed while I was teaching a course, Art in the Culture, at the Maryland House of Correction in Jessup, Maryland.
One of the inmates brought in a photograph of a group who made up a sports team in the prison. I asked him if I could use the photograph as part of a larger painting and he agreed. I juxtaposed the group against the large stones of the
Self-Portrait

This self-portrait was painted with me looking into a mirror in my home studio shortly after we moved to Florida.
Initially, the space between my face and the painting on the easel showed an open window with palm trees and a full moon. I painted that scene out in later stages of the painting as I felt it cluttered the composition and detracted from the portrait
